The custom resolution cannot be added
From WikiTechia
The error message "The custom resolution cannot be added" occurs when attempting to add a custom resolution with NVidia graphics card drivers, even though the resolution already exists in the driver but does not exist in the options (even when "Hide modes that this monitor cannot support" has been unticked).
It has something to do with the drivers always obeying the EDID on the screen, which in the case of the Dell 2405FPW, is excessively restrictive in terms of available resolutions.
Custom resolutions are commonly needed for large and widescreen displays.
Solution
To get the NVidia drivers to allow new custom resolutions for the screen, the advanced timing of a currently available resolution needs to be altered so it displays the custom resolution. This will then allow new custom resolutions to be added, after which the advanced timing of the resolution should be reverted back to what it was originally.
- Control Panel->Display Properties->Settings->Advanced
- Click on the tab with your graphics card name eg. GeForce 6800 GT
- Click Screen Resolutions & Refresh Rates
- Click Advanced Timing.
- Alter the current resolution so that it is a resolution you want to add, so change the following fields; Front-end active and Back-end active on both the Horizontal pixels section and Vertical lines section.
- Click OK.
- At this point you can start adding custom resolutions normally by clicking Add in the Custom resolutions and refresh rates section.
- Adjust the Advanced Timing of the original resolution that was edited so it is back to normal and displaying the original resolution.
