HOWTO Triple Head with NVidia cards under Windows 2000

Triple Head with two NVidia cards under Windows 2000 is a round about loop-the-loop mess. It's the ONLY reason I've upgraded to Windows 2003 Server for my main desktop.

Hardware

In my setup I had two NVidia cards:

  • NVidia 6800GT AGP
  • NVidia 5200 PCI

The PCI card was actually dual-head capable so this guide is just as valid for a quad head setup.

Problem

Enabling Dualview on the Windows2000 drivers from NVidia will require a restart so that it can install the dummy vga adapter. But when you get back into windows, the PCI card will be disabled and when you enable it, the vga adapter gets uninstalled.

Solution

If you actually want to call it a solution.... You have to do the install stage in safe mode and enable the PCI in safe mode. Then once you boot into windows normally, you will have all three screen firing.

Dead End

Unforturnately, on your next session with your PC, you'll be back to dualview only again. You have to go through "The Solution" process every single time you want to run with triple head on two cards.

CURSE YOU CRAPY DRIVERS AND MS FOR NOT SUPPORTING DUAL HEAD IN WIN2k!

Irony

Triple head probably would have worked flawlessly if I had gotten an ATI GFX card for my PCI as opposed to "getting the same brand so they won't conflict". I'm also having the same problems under linux....
