Solutions

The following solutions also work with XP.

RegEdit

  1. In the start menu search, type regedit to pull up the registry editor.
  2. Find in the tree HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
  3. Change AutoAdminLogon to 1
  4. Add/Change the String Value, DefaultUserName to the username you want to login automatically. To add new String Values just right-click New->String Value
  5. Add/Change the String Value, DefaultPassword to the corresponding password
  6. Add/Change the String Value, DefaultDomainName to the name of your computer, or if you are logging into a domain, the name of that domain.

Easy Mode

The method that you can use in windows XP is also valid for Vista. Luckily for many system administrators, Microsoft decided that most, if not all of the command line tools and applets would still operate in the same, or similar fashion. Using the Applet userpasswords2, which one can access by opening the "Run" Dialog box, you execute "control userpasswords2". This will bring up the user administration box, where you can add, edit and other various things with users.

Now, to get a user to automatically log on, you select the user you want to log in automatically from the box, then un-check the box at the top, "Users must enter username and password to use this computer", then click apply, then the system will prompt for the users password, and once this is done, the system will automatically log into the user you have selected.

IntelliAdmin

The previous solution was actually described over at IntelliAdmin.
