FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project improves the game by offering modern rendering techniques and higher resolution as well as new art and special effects. Here we'll look at how to get it running.
Lets get going!
MANUAL INSTALL: Grab the following files, from the Recent Official Releases section on FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project(FS2SCP) website;
Grab...
- FRED2_open x.x.x Executable
- Launcher x.x
*note*- (these are now usually bundled for the latest release! don't waste your time trying to download an old version [like i did...])
Then...
- Place the executable in your FreeSpace 2 directory.
- Extract the launcher to your FreeSpace 2 directory.
Try running the FRED2_open executable.
You can use the Launcher to setup more advanced options.

Missing devIL
If you get a problem starting with the following error dialogue;
This application has failed to start because ILU.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.
You need to install the devIL dll pack, devIL_dll_pack.zip, which can be found in the description of the Executable download here.
Just extract the files to your FreeSpace 2 directory.
devIL is responsible for image loading support used for the game textures.

Issues
Alt-tab
Alt-tab seems to crash the game.
Mouse support
There is an option in the game options to enable mouse input.
Joystick Support
In the Launcher, make sure your joystick is selected under Audio/Joystick tab.
You can configure the controller in the in game Options->Controller Config section.
Multiplayer
At this stage from what I can tell, the multiplayer section will reliably crash the game on my computer.
AbsolutZero seems to have no trouble.
Solution: "Failed to read flag file"
This error probably means you don't have OpenAL installed.

I know I shouldn't be adding to this but I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed to making this wiki because without this I wouldn't have had a chance in Hell to run Freespace 2 with the revised source code! Thanks guys :)
