Duke Nukem 3D is one of the most influential FPS games ever made. This article will show you how to get Duke3D running on modern systems.

For a long while source ports for Duke have been very shabby and generally didn't work. These days we have three main contentders and they all work remarkably well!

Source Ports

You only really need to pick one of the following three ports. xDuke is the only one that isn't 3d and the other two are fairly interchangable.

JFDuke

JFduke or The Jono F Port was made by Jonathon Fowler, this port was made completely from scratch, and is used to update the technical capabilities of the Original Duke Nukem 3d. It uses a new engine, with complete OpenGL support as well as allowing 3d Models to be placed within the game. The game has a smooth look, high frames per second in OpenGL mode and allows the use of the HRP add-on to look even better. With just a base install, it looks and feels the same as original Duke3d, just high resolution.

  • Download JFDuke (Get the zip)
  • Extract the zip to your Duke Nukem Directory.
  • Run setup.exe
  • Now run duke3d.exe

Hail to the king baby!

xDuke

xDuke is a Duke Nukem 3D port for the Win32 system. Designed by Matthieu Klein, the xDuke system is designed to make Duke Nukem 3d (Shareware -> 1.5 Atomic) work on a windows32 system, so it still uses the original 2.5d rendering engine. The game is kept as original as possible, leaving the natural feel of the duke game. xDuke is currently the most used Port of Duke Nukem 3d for multiplayer gaming.

xDuke is easy to install, Unzip and install in your Duke Nukem directory, run and enjoy!

eDuke32 and HRP

eDuke32 is from Richard Gobeille, This is reguarded as the MOD dream port for Duke3d. It's based on the JFDuke system, and allows greater support in CON files as well as better flexibility in the Con language and allows the use of the HRP add-on.

HRP (High Resolution Pack) seriously upgrades most of the textures and upgrades most sprites to 3D models. You do have the options of turning off models. Unfortunately though the HRP guys have the intention of going all 3D, so this means that the HRP doesn't have ANY high resolution sprites for those of us that just want a high resolution version of duke3d. It's still very pretty either way.

At the time of writing the HRP comes with eDuke32.

  • Install HRP to your Duke3d directory
  • Run Setup.exe
  • Execute the game using the following if you want to use the HRP.
eduke32.exe /gduke3d_xtr.zip

Dukester X

Dukester X is a launcher application that allows you to start a Multiplayer game of Duke3d with ease. Dukester X is relatively easy to use with its graphical interface, Simply Copy it into your Duke3d Directory, and run the DukesterX.exe
